International Friendship Association Salzbergen
157 people are currently a member of this association (May 2017). 50 of those are actively working for integrating refugees.
The integration work is very versatile. It is devided into (at the moment) 7 work groups:
1. IFA - Open speaking groups
The speaking group is open for everybody. Meetings are every monday at 18:30 pm at "Arche" next to the "Gemeindezentrum". Often more than 30 people are taking part in these speaking groups. Main topics are about daily routines and behaviours of refugees in this new town. Moreover, refugees can improve their level of German in an easy, relaxed atmosphere. The local authority of Salzbergen is suggesting to new refugees to take part in these open groups.
2. Language promoter
Teacher, who are still actively working, who are already retired and also people, who are not or did not work professioally as a teacher are teaching refugees German in a one-on-one working environment or in groups at home or in rooms of the building "Arche". The teacher are working closely together with the local adult education centre or other educational institutions.
In the group of sponsors are people, who give single refugees or whole refugee families aid to orientation. They help with everyday questions or occasionally accompany to doctor or governmental appointments.
4. Donations and allocation
The association is constantly receiving used and also new donations like clothing, contents and furniture from citizens or companies to forward them to needy refugees. For storage of those items the former farm Wehkamp (Schüttorfer Str. 89) was allowed the association to use the rooms.
5. IFA - Young adults
Younger refugees, local teenagers and young adults are meeting in the building "Tectum" every friday at 20:00 pm. The goal of these meetings is a relaxed atmosphere with games, pool and other leisure time activities.
6. Carpool "Schüttorfer Tafel"
Workers from the company "H&R ChemPharm" are driving refugees voluntarily weekly to the institution "Schüttorfer Tafel", where they can buy cheap groceries. For these drives the company "H & R ChemPharm" is providing a car for free.
7. "Project pushbike"
The "project pushbike" consists out of three modules - the pushbike or bicycle workshop, the transfer of traffic knowledge as well as the learning of riding a bike.
The "project pushbike" is located in a small car garage. The team consists out of local citizens as well as refugees. In the garage the refugees learn to repair their bikes by themselves. If possible the bikes are being fitted with shopping baskets or saddlebags, because for refugees the bike is most of the time the only transport possibility they have.
The knowledge of the refugees about how to behave in traffic and how to drive is still in development. At the moment refugees can find all traffic rules on sheets in different languages lying in the garage.
